CHARMING INSIDE AND OUT

This 1924 California bungalow is lovely from every angle. Its handsome navy exterior sets off the Craftsman-era architectural details, the Mediterranean tiles on the front steps, and the clean landscaping of the front yard. An inviting lawn, agapanthus, kangaroo paws, native grasses, and a big flowering tree complements the house nicely. Inside, the style has the same modern tone with charming vintage features.

The living room has a tiled fireplace with built-in shelves on either side. The three windows bring in lots of light, and the oak floors and arched entry are elegant period details. The dining room has a large window for afternoon sun, and a traditional Craftsman built-in sideboard of cabinets and drawers. The kitchen is warm and efficient, with lots of light and a six-burner gas range. As a fabulous bonus, there is a room off the kitchen that could be used in any number of ways: as a home office, as a laundry room, a breakfast nook or as a guest room. A back door leads to the deck that accesses the backyard. Down the hall, two bedrooms, both with great light and nice-sized closets, are on either side of a vintage-style bathroom, and a linen closet in the hall offers extra storage.

Outside, the backyard has a large patio with multi-use potential: it’s a perfect setup for entertaining and dining alfresco, or ample space for play structures and general exploring. Cyprus, citrus and fig trees, and bougainvillea, foxtail fern, euphorbia and rose fill the perimeter. Private, with both shade and sun, it's a sweet oasis for all kinds of outdoor play. A detached garage and large basement provide lots of storage.

The Bella Vista neighborhood has a sunny microclimate, a mixture of all lifestyles and is close to everything. Nearby are the restaurants and shopping of Park Boulevard in Glenview; the farmers' market and shops on Lakeshore Avenue; and the Thai, Burmese and Philippine cuisine. Commuters will find plenty of public transportation, and easy access to the freeway makes excursions farther afield a breeze. It’s not hard to spend the day enjoying the delights of Oakland's neighborhoods, and then come home to savor the view of twinkling lights in the hills.

An attractive house with many nearby attractions - this is Oakland at its best.
